buying silver as close to spot as possible and without vat

Postby triple-agent » Sat Feb 23, 2013 1:00 pm » Firefox 19.0 Firefox 19.0  Windows XP Windows XP  Screen Resolution: 1024 x 600 1024 x 600

this thread will hopefully serve two purposes:

1) keeping track of any premium disconnect between physical junk silver and spot price

2) sharing views on acquiring hold in your hand silver VAT free

i am minded of an article wj posted a while ago, reporting the premiums on US 'junk' silver went up as the spot price fell:

http://www.silverdoctors.com/silver-dem ... er-bags-2/

This morning, 2.742kg of pre47 sold on ebay for £829.50 (inc. p&p), therefore, the pos/t.oz = £18.85 compared to a spot price of 18.96

so in this instance, physical silver was purchased a tiny fraction under spot and of course without VAT

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130852501477? ... 26_rdc%3D1

I will be updating more examples over time and also including scrap listings (spoons etc.)

of course, it stands to reason the more 'desirable' the coin, the higher the premium. However, there are some good deals out there if you hunt them down e.g.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/36-Canadian-S ... 7675.l2557

in the above instance, the pos/t.oz paid was £20.76 compared to an actual spot of £19.4 (18/02/02), so a premium of 6.6%

but when you consider what you pay for bullion maples with premium and VAT, not a bad deal i think

I think hunting for silver cutlery ,tea pots etc could be very lucrative
the trick is to know your silver marks -the problem is there are so many variations
a multitude of markings on a silver piece is no guarantee they are not plated .
http://www.silvercollection.it/electrop ... verWZ.html
I have put a few spot price bids in at auction for silver teapots but havent been succesful
I generally stear clear if there is no numbering 800/925/999
I suspect boot sales may be a better hunting ground than auctions as the auction house will
usually have someone knowledgeable to identify the solid from the plate

MEXICO
Mexican silver varies in purity n the early part
of its history due to the Spaniard Standard of Silver coins.
The original 8 Reales or pillar dollar were of a purity of .9025
nd the engravers (Mint Master's) initials were stamped onto the coin itself
as a way of gauranteeing the purity of the silver.

It seems some mints kept up the practice of .9025 silver while
others erred on the side of caution making the silver .903

Re: buying silver as close to spot as possible and without v

Having just sold a lot of old family silver- various items, in the old days all sorts of things were made with silver- scissors, hair brushes, salt and pepper cellars etc

Trouble is, it's very difficult on the older pieces to read the (sometimes miniscule) hallmarks, as they have been vigorously polished for getting on for 100 years or more- one really would have to be an expert to suss out the good stuff out with the limitied time/conditions available at car boot sales. Not to mention I dubt people would take kindly to someone setting up somescaleson their wallpaper tables :snooty:

To be honest- is a sub ten per cent return really worth all the faffing around?

I am going to put a video on youtube soon re. Testing silver (24k promotion pix!), but bear in mind that this thread has focused on coin so far and hence the testing of historic silver coinage is more about experience and knowledge

To be honest I can't think of a single reason why I would choose to buy silver for 10% more than I needed to
Great list TA should come in handy

this is an interesting purchase, 56 walking liberty half dollars:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111017946798

the pos works out at £23.81 / t.oz, so not such a close deal to spot at £18.96 (but still cheaper than cid equiv junk silver with VAT)

But...the collection is guaranteed to include at least one 1916 & one 1921 coin, so if you sell them for their far higher than spot numismatic value, your pos costs will be lowered and you end up with some nice US coins......nice

no - I was second highest!

but, I am happy for the buyer - I am bidding on many lots with a low success rate, which ensures when I win its at the right price

Do you use any ebay snipe software?

I use Powersnipe its very good. Basically it enables you to place a max bid which only gets submitted in the last second of the auction, there fore not driving the price up and maybe winning. You can also setup bid groups which means you can add loads of max bids for lots of the same product, when one wins it cancels any others.

If I was buying coins via eBay I would definitely use it, would save you a fortune and would mean you did let stuff slip away by not being around when the auction closed.

If you are going to sign up use my link above please.
